My foray into Ethiopian food began around a year back. Some of you may remember discussions around organizing an Ethiopian food festival in Delhi. Talking to the Ethiopian embassy led me to Semene, which in turn led to many more meetings, lunches, dinners, food walks et al. Though the Ethiopian food festival never happened, it did result in meeting some very interesting people like Semene, Etsegenet and Abeba.
We’d been hounding Semene for a peek into real Ethiopian food and she relented a few days back and treated us to a lunch, coincidentally happening two days before a 2 month fast. We met at Etsegenet’s house where her sister Abeba cooked us a bunch of treats, including Injera, that unique Ethiopian flatbread, which Indu had been waiting to sink her teeth into. The food included curried chicken with eggs, curried mutton, fried mutton, roasted mutton with injera, pea powder curry and lentil curry. We also participated in the Buna Ceremony, which means Coffee Ceremony, where coffee beans were roasted, ground, brewed and served to us with Defo Dabo and large, pan baked leavened bread.
Thank you Abeba, Etsegenet and Semene!

Wow!! Sid I am green with envy…the food looks lipsmacking
SO was the food spicy??? The curries look so hot & delicious. Also what is “Injera”? They look like thick Dosas rolled up hehehe!!!
They were vaguely spicy; toned down for us, though we would have liked it spicy.
They were quite similar to dosas, though the ones made with teff flour (the dark ones) had a slightly metallic taste. All in all, quite delicious!
kaffee – freshly roasted……. let me go think about that for a while.
Sid: was good to see all the pics down here. i love the magic your camera gave to the coffee. Was nice having you arround. hopefully we ll have lots and lots of these…..
Hi Sid, what a wonderful blog. Is there any place I can get Ethiopian food in Delhi? I miss it!
@Seema: Thank you.
No, I am not aware of any Ethiopian restaurant in the NCR yet, though I have heard of one Ethiopian gent wanting to give it a shot.
I lived in Ethiopia a few years; went back again to visit. Fell in love with the people and FOOD! Do you know of any restaurants in Hyderabad that serve authentic Ethiopian cuisine? Alternately, could you refer me to any Ethiopians living in Hyderabad (or vicinity) who’re into Ethiopian cooking? I’ll be more than willing to pay for their trouble. Thank You! 1strr8cop@justice.com
