I don’t have a lot to say about eating out in Mumbai. I don’t however agree with Debashri on two of her selections; Rajdhani and Barbecue Nation. – Sid

  • Indian
    • Mughlai/Muslim: Muslim areas in Byculla, Mahim and Bhindi Bazaar,, especially during Ramzan.. Olympia, Bade Miyan,
    • Biryani: Koyla, Lucky Bandra
    • North Indian: Machaan, Urban Tadka, Barbeque Nation
    • Coastal Food: Trishna and Mahesh Lunch Home, Gajalee, Soul Curry. Though the best sea food is to be had at the Gomantak and Malwani cuisine restaurants at the smaller shops in Dadar, Shivaji Park.. also Satkar at Goregaon, Pratap Lunch Home in Fountain, Jai Hind in Bandra
    • Parsi: Jimmy Boy, Brittania, Snack Shack in Bandra Pali Naka, Ideal Corner. In a pokey little lane at Fort, this place serves some really good parsi food.
    • Bengali: Oh Calcutta, Hoogly
    • Street food: Chowpatty chaat, Vile Parle station street food, Khaoo Gullys at Churchgate (nr SNDT) and Malad (nr the Kandivali Shoppers Stop) for dosa, chaat, chinese, Santacruz station: Sandwizza had the largest and arguably tastiest Bombay sandwich, the quintessential vada pav: outside Mithibai college serves it with butter and two sauces
    • Rajasthani: Rajdhani
    • Malwani: Highway Gomantak – outstandingly fresh seafood (including local specialities like a dried shrimp salad and fish roe salad). No credit cards accepted, so be prepared. Samarth Lunch Home in Girgaum – again divine food, no credit cards. Please do not visit either if you are in any way fussed with ambience
    • Gujarati: Thakkars and Golden Star thali
    • Marathi: Diva Maharashtracha. Maybe a little overrated, but I love their mini thalipeeth with kheema and their kothimbir wadi. Also add Prakash and Aswad at Dadar for great Maharashtrian fast food and ‘fast’ food (food to be eaten during fasts) – batata wada, sabudana wadas, sabudana khichdi, misal…
    • Quick Bite: Theobroma, Gaylords, Bakerys in Bandra: Amercian Express and A-1 for assorted of bakery ware… and also Hearch & Co. is very popular, Vithal near sterling has great chaat, Candies at Bandra, Ayubs Rolls at Fort (behind Rhythm House) which makes one of the most incredible bhuna rolls.
  • Phoren
    • Italian: Little Italy, Mangii Ferra, Penne
    • American Diner: Hard Rock Cafe, Churchill cafe
    • Chinese: 5 Spice, Legacy of China
    • Middle Eastern: Olio at the Novotel
    • Pan-Asian: Global Fusion buffet
    • World Cuisine: Basilico, Indigo Deli, Olive, Moshe’s
    • Mexican: Sammy Sosa (great pub too), Sancho’s

    • Sizzlers: Fountain Sizzlers, Yoko, Kobe, Out of the Blue
    • Burger chain: Bembos
    • Grilled Chicken : Nando’s (South American restaurant chain)
    • Vegetarian: Govinda @ ISKON Temple, Rajdhani veg thali, Thakkars, Bhagat Tarachand, Swati Snacks
    • Brunch: J. W. Marriot, Olive n Indigo
    • Salads, Sandwich, Soup: Afternoon buffet at Not Just Jazz by the Bay
    • Food after 1 am: Zaffran, Apna Dhaba, bhurji pav at irla
    • Wine bar: Ivy
    • Ice cream parlours: Naturals, Rustoms in Churchgate for ice cream sandwiches, Bachelors Chowpatty, Parsi Dairy, Gelato: Amore
    • Juice center: Haji Ali and Amar Juice Center in Irla, juice and snacks
    • Pav Bhaji: the most famous is Sardar at Tardeo
