No Underdogg This

I loved the Underdoggs experience and will return.

Beefy Cheeseburger

ThumbsUp I visited Underdoggs a few weeks back at Ambiance Mall in Vasant Kunj. A sports bar in a city that already has a few claimants to the top spot, I’ll readily say Underdoggs is probably #1. Just in case you’re wondering about the name, Underdoggs celebrates the underdog, long shots or dark horses or whatever else you call them. The walls are plastered with stories from gaming history that underscore this base value. The turtle, who Preet Saini, the owner, describes as ‘the biggest underdog of them all’ (remember the story of the hare and the tortoise?), has been adopted as the official mascot for Underdoggs.

Be definition, the screening of sports channels on multiple televisions is enough to qualify a bar as a sports bar. Underdoggs however takes it a step further. It not only has many LCDs all over the premises, the owners have very thoughtfully equipped it with multiple indoor games, some never seen before in Delhi, and made it into a nearly complete family entertainment hub that’ll probably see dozens of tables being banged simultaneously during game seasons. Why do I say ‘nearly complete’? The lack of a few arcade video games. That’s me though. Having said that, there’s no denying the thought that’s been applied to the design of Underdoggs. For example, the hanging boxing bags aren’t just adding to the décor. You’ll find pairs of boxing gloves tucked away in a corner alongside dozens of board games.Private rooms with large screen televisions, bars and sofas complete the ambiance.

If you were planning to teach your 8 year old son how to ‘be a man’, perhaps Underdoggs is the right venue. Stop at the boxing though; he’s too young for beer and it’s not going to help the hair on his chest grow any faster.

Talking of the owners, I was very pleasantly surprised to know Underdoggs is being run by the same folks who’re behind one of my all time favorite restaurants, Mrs Kaurs in Khan Market. The menu at Underdoggs has a few dishes from the Mrs Kaurs menu and regulars will instantly recognize Mrs Kaurs stapes like the Newcastle Crepe. It wasn’t really a nice day to try the food what with the Navaratras going on and all. Platters delivered for the rest of the group on the table were quite different from what they would have been in their full glory. My dining companions had made alterations to the dish including an instruction to exclude salt among other ingredients. So no comments there as the dish wasn’t served as the restaurant intended. I did however try the Texas Rodeo Burger (395), a Caesar salad and a Salmon Ceviche with Mango and Fresh Herbs (375). The food is, to be honest and forgiving at the same time, far better than the spastic attempts made by many others for similar menus, but also needs a little tweaking to reach the rarefied heights Mrs Kaurs has us used to.

The overall experience delivered at Underdoggs is wonderful. So much so, I’m probably going to watch the next cricket match there, never having watched a single match in my life! Sitting across the bar, I could easily visualize the frenzy during a match; something I’d like to experience at least once and suggest you do so too, match season or not.
