Howzatt, Galaxy Mall, Gurgaon

ThumbsUp Gurgaon is obviously hitting the big time where partying is concerned. Beer of the type served by Howzzat should be put up on a pedestal away from pesky mortal hands, to be gazed at in admiration by one and all. Which is more than I can say for the neighbouring island.

suburb-icon We visited Howzzat recently and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of their brews, the Googly in particular. Served in large 500ml mugs, the beer is chilled and as fresh as can be. In fact, you can see it being brewed right behind the bar! Doesn’t get fresher than that now, does it? Each of their three stars have this excellent, grainy after taste that I fell in love with and just couldn’t get enough of; to me it was the pure essence of deep fried maize snacks.

The service is prompt and comes with super sized 100 watt smiles loaded with enough cheer to last you all the way home and back again. I do wish they’d try to stop emulating Siberia and lower the temperatures a bit… or serve Stolichnaya. The seating is a bit cramped in places, especially for a big guy like me and quite open in other areas. Cosy corners loaded with sofas, tall tables for two or large sofas for intimate conversations – Howzzat has it all. Intimate conversation however, tends to be discouraged by the volume of ambient noise and music, though I’ll say I like their picks. With the smoking zone no more than a hop, skip and jump away, smoker won’t miss their nicotine fix.

Having waxed eloquent, their table booking system is iffy and so is the food. Going by a recent experience, the chaps on the phone get quite snooty about booking and perhaps even rude at times. Our first order involved a blue cheese dip and the white stuff on our plater obviously came from a bottle and had no clue what a blue cheese was. The second order required peanut sauce; coconut sauce was delivered. The third dish (separate occasion) was a Tangra style chicken, which was very nice. Iffy, as you can see.

Don’t let that bog you down however – the beer is what matters and since The Monk is alongside – you won’t want for good food.
Stay focussed, drink beer and make merry – that’s what Howzzat is all about.
