(4/5)
Squid There’s something about the name ‘Mrs Kaurs’ that immediately brings up a warm feeling inside me. I can’t help but imagine a kindly, middle-aged, white haired and bespectacled lady churning out goodies from her kitchen. Sort of like Mrs Wilson in Dennis the Menace, if you’ve read that strip. In real life too, Mrs Kaurs Crepes isn’t very far from that fantasy. So much so, that after tentatively eating there one evening, we went back in full force with the entire Khullar clan in tow. How’s that for a vote of confidence? Let’s rewind to the first meal at Mrs Kaurs Crepes and perhaps I’ll be able to convey just why I love it so much.

We ordered a bunch of stuff – Calamari Salt and Pepper, a and Spicy Crepe, Grilled Chops in Black Pepper Sauce and a Newcastle Sweet Crepe. I also pecked at bits of a Penne Alfredo, Lamb burger with and a Grilled Sea Bass with Capers. All of it was accompanied by this drink called Thai Spice.

I’m not sure what to make of the drink. Perhaps I didn’t like it, or perhaps I did. Not too sure about that – perhaps I would order it the next time or perhaps I wouldn’t. Iffy. What I do know is that it was -grassy, peppery, gingery and quite refreshing. Maybe it was a trifle too sweet for my taste or was it too complex? Don’t know really. What I do know is that it’s definitely worth a try and if you’re at Mrs Kaurs Crepes, you must order this one and tell me what you thought of it. Perhaps your comment will help me make up my mind!

Newcastle Crepe 3 The Calamari Salt and Pepper was unlike any other I’ve tasted. Instead of the usual wafer thin, crisp coating there was a thick spicy coating around each piece of squid and it was also the tastiest Salt Pepper dish I’ve eaten till . Squid is quite easy to go wrong with – you end up with rubbery results if you under or over cook it and then all that’s left is fit to be attached to the top of pencils or thrown down the chute. Not so here. The squid was perfectly done – tender, spicy and the flavors on the platter as a whole were well thought through. The portions could be a little larger, but that’s wasn’t the end of the world. I’d order this one again any day.

Magical things happen to crepes at Mrs Kaurs Crepes. They say you shouldn’t eat pickles and soda the night before because it gives you wierd dreams. Go on, stuff your face with pickles, drown yourself in soda and dream up a crepe. A strange one. Chances are, they’ll have it on the menu at Mrs Kaurs Crepes, and even better, it’ll probably be beyond compare. My and Spicy Crepe was stuffed with a scrumptious mixture of tender and spicy and topped with melted . Such a crepe and a drink are all you want for a quick lunch at Khan Market.

The grilled chops were good too. Yes, chops in pepper sauce is quite a cliched dish, but then everyone loves it! So did I. The penne, lamb burger and grilled fish were good too. I only ate a morsel from each, and if my tonsils weren’t floating in an undescribable mixture of Thai Spice, Chops and , I’d have ordered a portion of each in a jiffy.

The Newcastle Crepe is a whole story in itself, a symphony in chocolate that I won’t attempt to describe. Try it and listen to each sweet note for yourself.

Minus points? The service. I found the service to be a wee bit oversmart, pushy and lackadaisical at different times, but not so much that you’ll be put off.

Do visit Mrs Kaurs Crepes and try one of their excellent breakfast platters sometime – they’re , just like the rest of their offerings.
