The 16th of April was an interesting day, what with the Taman Gang launch party in DLF Place Mall, Vasant Kunj and the Kum-Gang Korean restaurant in the Ashok Hotel opening it’s doors to a refurbished look.
Taman Gang describes itself as a fine dining restaurant serving pan Asian cuisine. Started up by Ms Sharmila Nath, Taman Gang is her first culinary venture and by the looks of it, will probably do well. Taman Gang is also a popular and well known restaurant in London, which is acclaimed as one of Mayfair’s recommended places to dine. Did you know ‘Taman Gang’ is Balinese for ‘Park Lane’? I didn’t… but then I don’t know Balinese either.
The Taman Gang in Vasant Kunj is probably a franchise of the one in London. The launch also saw Chef Ricky Pang of the Taman Gang London.
Though I didn’t get to sample much food, since the launch was mostly about cocktails and snacks, I did like the interiors and the way they’ve built things. Spread over 4,500 square feet, Taman Gang has enough open space, so even big guys like me don’t have to bump along the sides to get from one place to another. The availability of space probably allowed the designers to get a little creative with the interiors of Taman Gang. For example, I popped into this place called ‘Pearls Regency’ one afternoon for a quick lunch. The route to the restaurant was horribly crowded and the interiors were not unlike a dentists waiting room, only worse, with sofas and tables laid out back to back. If it had been crowded, my passing would have seen quite a few people’s faces getting dunked in their soup.
Back to Taman Gang. They’ve spent some quality time on the interiors and one thing I particularly liked about the layout of the Taman Gang are the private dining areas – two of ‘em. One is a cosy litte room that seats two – ideal for romantic evenings I guess and another that seats 10 – totally private and very well suited for intimate, family dinners and stuff. Nice. The lighting is kept low, perhaps a little too low in my opinion, but then that’s me being practical. It does look quite warm and comforting.
As I said, the only food available were light snacks like sweet potato tempura, fruits, chicken burgers (???) and roasted lamb (brilliant!) so I’m afraid a report on the food isn’t really possible at this time – perhaps another time when I work out the time to go visit again. Having said that, if their menu is anything like that of the Taman Gang in London, we’re probably in for a good time - I mean, how wrong can you go with stuff like ‘Beef and Foie Gras Gyoza with Teriyaki’? A good wine list will probably finish things up quite well.
Should you go? I think so – going by their staff, glimpses of their kitchen, the cocktails and the effort spent overall, I believe the Taman Gang will probably offer some seriously good food. You can find Taman Gang at: #315, DLF Place Mall (Next to DLF Emporio Mall), Vasant Kunj, New Delhi.

PS: In the meantime, check out some of the delicious pictures below.

Hi Sid,
Delhi’s definitely turning into a culinary melting pot. Next time you’re around Chanakyapuri, why not head over and check out the refurbishment at Kum-Gang and also try-out our menu
- Chipo –
p.s. Looking forward to output from Food Buzz event.
@Chipo: Sounds good – I love Korean food! The Foodbuzz event never happened, as all except two food bloggers in Delhi didn’t bother to RSVP.
Hey Sid,
I think I am a little late on this topic, but speaking of Pan Asian food, Chilli Seasonss at Defence Colony serves some of the best food from the region. The food has been appreciated over and over again and the flavours are out of this world. Try it the next time you are around. The restaurant’s also having a Vietnamese Food Festival from 15th Nov till 20th Dec ’09.
